How to spot early signs of roof damage

How to spot early signs of roof damage

Your roof protects everything inside your home — your family, furniture, and all your
memories. But over time, weather and age can cause wear and tear. The good news?
You can often spot roof problems early before they turn into costly repairs. Here’s what
to look for!

1. Missing or Curled Shingles

Take a look at your roof from the ground. If you notice shingles that are missing,
cracked, or curling at the edges, that’s a sign your roof may need repair. Damaged
shingles can let water sneak underneath and cause leaks.

2. Dark Spots or Stains

Dark streaks on your roof might look like dirt, but they’re often caused by algae or
moisture. These stains can make your roof wear out faster and may even signal water
damage underneath.

3. Granules in the Gutters

When shingles start to age, they shed tiny sand-like pieces called granules. Check your
gutters or downspouts — if you see lots of granules, your roof might be losing its
protective layer.

4. Leaks or Water Spots Inside

If you notice brown spots on your ceiling or walls, that’s a sign water is getting through
your roof. Even a small leak can lead to mold, damaged insulation, or wood rot if left
untreated.

5. Sagging Roof Lines

Stand back and look at your roof from the yard. The lines of your roof should look
straight. If you see sagging or dips, it may mean the structure underneath is weak or
water-damaged.

6. Clogged or Damaged Gutters

Your gutters help guide water away from your roof and home. If they’re clogged, bent, or
pulling away, water can back up and damage your roof edges or fascia boards.

7. Moss or Mold Growth

Moss looks harmless but can trap moisture against your shingles, causing them to lift or
crack. If you see green patches or moldy spots, it’s time to have your roof checked.
